  Here's some news from The Associated Press:=20

  Leach named Devils assistant coach, Carpenter named head coach at =
Albany=20
  The Associated Press=20

  8/3/01 12:08 PM=20
  EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Jay Leach, who served as an assistant =
coach=20
  with Larry Robinson in Los Angeles, was hired by the New Jersey Devils =
in a=20
  similar capacity.=20
  Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello on Friday also named Bobby =
Carpenter as=20
  head coach of the Albany River Rats of the AHL, the franchise's top =
minor=20
  league team.=20
  Carpenter, who was the River Rats' associate coach, replaces John =
Cunniff,=20
  who was moved to the Devils' scouting staff along with Kurt =
Kleinendorst.=20
  Kleinendorst was an assistant coach for the Devils last season.=20
  Besides scouting this season, he will also work with the United States =

  Olympic team in Salt Lake City.=20
  Goaltender Chris Terreri, who split last season playing with the =
Devils and=20
  the New York Islanders, was named an assistant coach at Albany along =
with=20
  Geordie Kinnear, a longtime River Rats' player.=20
  Leach, 48, joins the Devils after spending the past two seasons as an=20
  assistant coach with Atlanta. He spent three seasons as Robinson's =
assistant=20
  with Los Angeles.=20
  Leach was the coach of Hershey of the AHL from 1993-94 to 1995-96, and =
of=20
  Springfield from 1991-93. His AHL teams won two division championships =
and=20
  one conference playoff championship.=20
  The Lexington, Mass., native began his NHL coaching career as an =
assistant=20
  with Hartford in 1988. His coaching resume includes four years as an=20
  assistant with the University of Maine and two years at Merrimack. =
Leach=20
  played in the Quebec Nordiques and Minnesota North Stars systems, as =
well as=20
  the Eastern League.=20

  Carpenter, 38, was an assistant the past two seasons in Albany. In =
addition,=20
  he joined Robinson's staff from late March through the end of the =
Stanley Cup=20
  playoffs the past two seasons. Carpenter played 18 seasons in the NHL =
with=20
  Washington, the Rangers, Los Angeles, Boston, and New Jersey, winning =
the=20
  Stanley Cup with Devils in 1995.=20
  Terreri, 36, spent 11 of his 13 NHL seasons with the Devils, winning =
Stanley=20
  Cup in 1995 and 2000. Kinnear, 28, retired in December due to medical=20
  reasons. He spent most of his career with Albany, and remains the =
club's=20
  all-time leader in games played (406).=20

  The Devs sure like their Terreri!=20
  paige- >>

     Some VERY interesting stuff there! It figures that the boldest =
changes Lou makes this off-season are the COACHING ones, although there =
could be something to that. I had a feeling Lou wasn't that impressed =
with Kleinendorst if Carpenter would get called up to replace him later =
in the year. I'm more than happy to see Carp in Albany as Cunniff really =
had worn out his welcome imo :P But the weird thing is TERRERI as Rats =
assistant... are ex goalies typically assistant coaches behind the =
bench? Or is he going to be an actual goalie coach instead?

    I'm very happy to see Kinnear getting an assistant position with the =
Rats..... Geordie was a trooper and deserves this chance. I can't =
imagine it being a bad move, because he has the respect of the young =
guys and surely they can learn something from him.
