He absolutely has a right to be greedy. I just question his reaction to
the whole arbitration thing. This team will not be better without him
unless we get someone good in a trade for him. We are already weak up
front after losing Mogilny. Holik is a different kind of player, of
course, but he is still a valuable one. More than any other forward
(Stevens more than any other player) he symbolizes to me what Devils
hockey is all about.
A despondent Holik is no good for the team. That said, if his quotes are
any indication, he will have a monster season as he tries to wring
out every last dollar.
Paige, it is always tough when someone from a team's nuclues moves on or
retires. I'm still disappointed Mattingly had to retire. However, it is a
business and you have to look at it like one. I know that it is cliche,
but players and teams don't care about you and me, they only care about
our money. There are very few players I connect with; I am a
Devils fan first and a player fan a very distant second. It would be nice
if players were nice to fans and media but as long as the Devils win that
is ancillary to me.
Pete
P.S. Apparently Robert Reichel played for Phoenix last season and was
traded to Toronto this summer but neither ESPN or the NHLPA list him as a
player.
"I'm sure there are some players who simply can't deal with the fans and
the press and the toll bridges in the Tri-State Area. " --Rob Neyer
"You don't have to have faith, as long as you never give up." --Ben Spatz
"Welcome to England, mate. Our country sucks, our weather sucks so we
have to drown our sorrows." --Chad Smith
"My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable and I'm just ferocious."
