PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Montreal Canadiens star Stephane Richer signed a
tryout contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins after spending last season out
of pro hockey.

General manager Craig Patrick will decide by Oct. 1 whether to offer the
35-year-old right wing a contract, said Richard Teoli, Richer's agent. The
Penguins' season opener is Oct. 3.

Richer, a two-time 50-goal scorer with Montreal, reported to the Washington
Capitals' camp last year but left after a day. He spent the summer working
out in a league for police officers in Quebec.

Richer has 407 goals and 384 assists in 17 seasons. He had 50 goals for the
Canadiens in 1987-88 and 51 in 1989-90. He has not scored more than 23 goals
in a season since 1993-94 when he had 36 for New Jersey.

His last NHL season was 1999-00 when he had eight goals and 17 assists in 36
games for the St. Louis Blues.
