Rick,

There is a better way to work out the salaries.  It's called "performance 
base pay" but unfortuantely it will never happen.  The general idea is that 
everyone earns the same base salary (a tiered system where the base is 
determined by years in NHL or games played, for example) and additional 
salary is awarded as players perform.  For example, a bonus for each goal 
scored, or end of season stats, like +/-.  (Different positions - like 
offense, defense and goaltenders - would have different "bonus" scales.)  It 
will never happen because the NHLPA would have a fit.  Heaven forbid a 
player have a record year and not be rewarded for it for the rest of his 
life, no matter how much of a fluke it was.
