Avalanche to Retire Bourque's No. 77

DENVER (AP) - Ray Bourque, the highest scoring defenseman in NHL history,
will have his number retired by the Colorado Avalanche in November.

Bourque, who retired in June, will become the first player in Colorado's
six-year history to have his number retired when his No. 77 is raised to the
rafters in a ceremony on Nov. 24, prior to the Avalanche's game against the
Edmonton Oilers.

Bourque, who played in Boston for 21 seasons, will also have his number
retired by the Bruins on Oct. 4. Bourque was traded at his request to
Colorado, where he realized his career-long goal of winning a Stanley Cup.

The Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils in the seventh game of the finals
June 9 to capture their second Stanley Cup.

``By retiring No. 77, we're honoring one of the greatest professionals ever
to play in both major league sports and the National Hockey League,'' said
Pierre Lacroix, Avalanche general manager and president.

The 40-year-old Bourque announced his retirement on June 26 in Denver. He
ended his career with 410 goals, 1,169 assists and 1,579 points.

Bourque, with Colorado for 15 months, also won five Norris trophies, awarded
annually to the league's best defenseman.

Winning a Stanley Cup for Bourque became a rallying cry for the Avalanche and
their fans during the playoffs.

``He was an integral part of this organization for a short time, but the
impact he had on this team and this community will be remembered forever,''
Lacroix said.
