Devils give Brylin new 3-year deal=20
Wednesday, August 22, 2001By MARK J. CZERWINSKI
Staff WriterSergei Brylin doesn't have to worry about being appreciated any=20
more.On the heels of a breakthrough season in which he was finally given a=20
regular job with the Devils, the gritty winger signed a new three-year=20
contract Monday. That means the Devils will have every player on their roste=
r=20
under contract when training camp opens Sept. 11 at South Mountain=20
Arena.Brylin wouldn't discuss the money aspect of the deal, but said he was=20
satisfied. A Group II free agent, he passed up a shot at arbitration to=20
negotiate this deal."My agent was talking with Lou Lamoriello, Devils genera=
l=20
manager for a long time," Brylin, 27, said. "I figured it was going pretty=20
well. Maybe I could've gone to arbitration and gotten a little more money,=20
but you never know. It was the right decision, and it worked out well."I=20
don't care that it took so long. I knew that Lou was going to be busy with=20
his arbitration cases. I think he was really reasonable with me."Brylin, a=20
favorite of coach Larry Robinson, had career highs in games played (75),=20
goals (23), assists (29), and points (52). He was troubled again by a=20
recurring knee problem, but did not need any off-season surgery."Right now,=20
the knee is good," said Brylin, who spent the summer in his native Russia an=
d=20
also vacationed in France. "I haven't been doing anything special with it.=20
Just the regular stuff. I'm trying to make it as strong as it can be."This=20
should prove to be an interesting season for Brylin. There will be more=20
pressure to perform after the way he played last season, and, now that Devil=
s=20
assistant Slava Fetisov has been named head coach and general manager of Tea=
m=20
Russia, there might be a chance for Brylin to play in the Olympics."That=20
would be great for me, but I don't know," Brylin said. "Ask Slava. He's the=20
coach and GM, and it's up to him."ALBANY ADDRESSED: In a move aimed at addin=
g=20
some depth and experience to the Albany team in the American Hockey League,=20
the Devils signed journeyman center Ted Drury.The 6-foot-8, 208-pounder, who=
=20
turns 30 in September, spent most of last season with the Chicago Wolves of=20
the International Hockey League after being selected by Columbus in the=20
expansion draft. Drury has played eight NHL seasons with Calgary, Hartford,=20
Ottawa, Anaheim, and the Islanders.
