Me thinks this pattern might be repeated in our near future...
This from Faceoff.com:
The <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/nhl/teams/mapleleafs">Toronto Maple Leafs</A>' summer of peace and love has hit a sudden sour note
with the agent for <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Curtis&lname=Joseph">Curtis Joseph</A> questioning the goalie's future with the
club.
The signing of Joseph to a long-term deal, expected to be a formality this
off-season, has suddenly gone off the rails with the two sides apart by about
US $1.7-million annually over a three-year extension.
"I'm at a loss how to respond," agent Don Meehan said yesterday after
receiving the Leafs' final offer, a response to an initial contract proposal
submitted by Meehan several weeks ago. It "calls into question <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Curtis&lname=Joseph">Curtis Joseph</A>
's future with the <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/nhl/teams/mapleleafs">Toronto Maple Leafs</A>."
The Leafs proposed a three-year deal worth US $7.3-million annually starting
this season, which would have maintained Joseph's position as the
third-highest paid netminder in the<A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/nhl/"> NHL </A>behind <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Dominik&lname=Hasek">Dominik Hasek</A> and <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Patrick&lname=Roy">Patrick Roy</A>.
Joseph is in the final year of a four-year deal that will see him earn US
$6.45-million this season.
But the goalie was believed to be looking for a contract on a par with
captain <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Mats&lname=Sundin">Mats Sundin</A> who earlier this summer signed a six-year extension worth
US $52.5-million, with US $7.5-million this season and US $9-million annually
in the last five years.
Sundin and Joseph were in identical contract situations with one year left on
existing contracts before being eligible for unrestricted free agency next
July.
Bill Watters, assistant to the president and the Maple Leafs' top negotiator,
called Meehan's reaction "unfortunate. We want to make <A HREF="http://www.faceoff.com/scripts/action/goplayer.asp?fname=Curtis&lname=Joseph">Curtis Joseph</A> a Maple
Leaf until he's finished. It's in the hands of Don Meehan."
Now, with the two sides differing significantly on Joseph's worth, the team's
most popular player on and off the ice faces a season dominated by questions
about his future -- which seemed, until recently, to be predictable.
