Gandler indicated that another of his clients, Patrik Elias, will be at=20
Devils' training camp when it opens on Sept. 12. Elias, who finished third i=
n=20
the league in scoring last season with 96 points, is scheduled to make=20
$750,000 this season, before becoming eligible for arbitration for the first=
=20
time.

Earlier this month, Elias's linemate and fellow Czech, Petr Sykora, received=
=20
the largest percentage increase in N.H.L. arbitration history. Sykora was=20
awarded a two-year deal for $3.3 million and $3.535 million the next two=20
seasons, a 389 percent raise on the $675,000 he made last season.=20

 If Sykora was the most underpaid player in the league last season, that=20
distinction now belongs to Elias, who is highly sensitive to his lack of=20
bargaining power vis-=E0-vis the current collective bargaining agreement.=20

Unhappy with his contract situation two summers ago, Elias held out until th=
e=20
end of October. But Gandler indicated Elias would not repeat that tactic thi=
s=20
fall.
"If New Jersey is interested in signing Patrik to a longer-term deal, we=20
would be very interested in exploring such a deal," Gandler said. "If not,=20
he's happy. Patrik has a contract. He intends to honor it and have a good=20
season."
