EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (June 2) -- New Jersey Devils center Jason Arnott was
hospitalized briefly after being hit in the face by the puck and collapsing
early in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday night.
Jason Arnott was struck by the puck in the left temple during the opening
seconds of Game 4. Arnott had precautionary X-rays at St. Barnabas Medical
Center in Livingston, N.J., and was released, NHL spokesman Frank Brown said.
Arnott is expected to make the trip to Denver on Sunday.
The Devils rallied without him for two third-period goals and a 3-2 victory
over the Colorado Avalanche that tied the best-of-7 series at two games each.
"You know something is wrong with Jason to go down,'' teammate Scott Gomez
said.
On the first shift of the game, Arnott was struck near his left temple by
Colorado defenseman Adam Foote's clearing attempt along the boards near the
Avalanche bench.
Arnott went to the dressing room, then came back to finish the first period.
But he did not return to the Devils' bench at the start of the second period.
"I just came back in and they told me that he wasn't coming back for the
second period,'' coach Larry Robinson said.
Arnott, who centers New Jersey's struggling 'A' line, missed about 2 1/2
minutes of ice time in the first. He returned to the bench around the
7-minute mark and resumed a regular shift throughout the rest of the first
period.
When he was injured, Arnott skated off the ice and, while behind the bench,
collapsed near the door. Shortly after, he got up and walked off unassisted
to the dressing room.
Arnott had scored one of New Jersey's first three goals in the series before
Saturday. His linemates Petr Sykora and Patrik Elias had no goals through the
first 10 periods of the series -- including the first period of Game 4.
Elias scored his first of the series, with New Jersey short-handed, to tie it
1-1 about 3 1/2 minutes into the second. Sykora got the game-winner with just
2:37 left.
