The Sporting News
Trades have been made. Youngsters have been tried. Coaches -- many, many
coaches -- have hit the road. But the defending Stanley Cup champion
Devils are still the best team in the NHL.
Why?
Great goaltending: Martin Brodeur.
A flexible coach: Larry Robinson is creative and technical in his approach
and knows the sacrifices needed to win it all.
Strength up the middle: Jason Arnott, Bobby Holik, Scott Gomez and John
Madden.
Depth and mobility on defense: Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer, Brian
Rafalski, Ken Daneyko, Colin White, Sean O'Donnell and Mike Commodore.
Game breakers: Alexander Mogilny, Patrik Elias and Petr Sykora.
Leadership: Stevens and Daneyko.
A solid system: It isn't the boring neutral-zone trap that purists dreaded
in 1995, but rather a disciplined yet creative system that makes this team
dangerous on both offense and defense.
