WEST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - Giving Martin Brodeur a rare day off is putting John
Vanbiesbrouck on the spot.

Vanbiesbrouck will make his second start in goal for the Devils on Friday
night against the Vancouver Canucks, and there will be more than just a game
involved.

The ``Beezer'' also has to consider what is now ``The Streak.''

The Devils come into the game riding a franchise-record, 12-game winning
streak that has put them five wins away from tying the NHL record of 17
straight victories set by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992-93.

``It's fun to be playing with something on the line, and it's a challenge,''
Vanbiesbrouck said Thursday after practice at South Mountain Arena. ``It's
not fun until you win. It's a challenge and it's welcomed by me.''

Vanbiesbrouck, acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders on March 12
for backup goalie Chris Terreri, played well in his only start with the
Devils, stopping 17 shots in a 3-2 win at Phoenix two days after the trade.

``You always want to play with something on the line because I know that soon
I will probably be watching a lot with Marty playing, so this is a good
test,'' the 19-year veteran said.

Vanbiesbrouck has been impressed by his new teammates the past two games. New
Jersey beat Calgary 4-2 on Monday night, allowing a season-low 13 shots.
Against the Rangers on Wednesday night, the Devils bettered that defense,
allowing just 11 shots in a 4-0 victory.

``This team can do it at both ends of the ice,'' Vanbiesbrouck said. ``When
you can do it at both ends, you're going to win a lot of hockey games. The
confidence is up right now, and when we've had goals scored on us, we've come
right back. I like what I see.''

This will mark only the eighth game that Brodeur has not started this season.

After the last two games, Brodeur quipped that he really didn't need the
rest. But he also accepted his day off.

``It's like anything, they have him here for a reason,'' Brodeur said of
Vanbiesbrouck. ``They want to play him. It's not that I don't want to get
rest.''

Brodeur, 38-15-11 this season, said the streak will create some pressure for
Vanbiesbrouck.

``It's nice to be able to be with us but definitely it's a little bit of
pressure,'' said Brodeur, who recorded his 50th career shutout on Wednesday.
``But he's old enough to handle it.''

Vanbiesbrouck is 11-25-5 on the season.
