The Last Word
By BILL LANKHOF
Good morning, Pat Quinn. Heard you were complaining about the officials.
Again. Everybody look surprised.
Anyway, this is not a good sign. Like a young man's fancy goes with
springtime, like duct tape goes with the family car, like a mother-in-law
goes with arsenic in her tea, so a hockey coach complaining about officials
is a certain harbinger of doom.
The volume of the whine is always directly proportional to the size and
frequency of defeat.
Please, make it stop, Pat. You're hurting our ears.
READERS' SOAPBOX: "It must be great living in Toronto. The Leafs scrape into
the playoffs with a pathetic second half and everyone talks about how this
team is built for the playoffs as though that gives it credibility. The
Leafs are a mediocre team that played over its head in dispatching the
Ottawa Senators in Round 1," M.H. writes. "I'll go on record. The New Jersey
Devils in five -- and three of the games will not be close. (Keeping Score:
That cracking sound you hear? It's the limb you crawled out on.)
