Islanders set to announce Yashin signing

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Islanders have called a news conference
for Wednesday to announce the signing of Alexei Yashin to the biggest
contract package in NHL history.

The Russian center, who joined New York in a June trade with Ottawa, is
expected to receive a 10-year deal worth about $90 million.

Colorado's Joe Sakic has the NHL's largest current contract package. The NHL
MVP agreed to a five-year, $50.5 million deal in July that contains a club
option for a sixth year that would increase the package to $57 million.

Washington forward Jaromir Jagr will make $20.7 million over the next two
seasons, making him the highest-paid player by annual salary.

The Islanders acquired Yashin for the second pick in the NHL draft - which
the Senators used to select forward Jason Spezza - and forward Bill Muckalt
and defenseman Zdeno Chara.

After sitting out the entire 1999-00 season in a contract dispute, Yashin had
a team-high 40 goals and 48 assists last season. But he managed just one
assist as Toronto swept the second-seeded Senators in the first round of the
playoffs.

The 27-year-old center had 218 goals and 273 assists in 504 regular-season
games with Ottawa. He had a career-high 44 goals and 50 assists in 1998-99,
and was the runner-up for the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP.
