Canucks, Flames raise money for Red Cross
VANCOUVER (CP) -- The Vancouver Canucks raised over $130,000 Cdn while the Calgary Flames collected over $25,000 for the American Red Cross disaster relief fund on Sunday during pre-season intrasquad scrimmages.

At Vancouver, in addition to donating ticket revenues from the 13,094 fans who attended the annual Blue-Silver game to the families of victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, the Canucks collected donations in the concourse, and Vancouver players chipped in another $3,170.

"It's wonderful. It's a great opportunity for people to help those who need the help," Canucks general manager Brian Burke said.

The total could grow once donations and parking revenue are added.

"It's a great response, but I'm not surprised," Burke said. "I think we have great fans."

At Calgary, team White beat team Black 3-1 as fans watched to raise money.

"Calgarians' response to the people affected by this disaster has been overwhelming," said Shirley Diaz, the Red Cross' regional director in southern Alberta. "We are touched by how members of the community like the Calgary Flames have come together in this tragic time to demonstrate their support in their own way."
